"1 Workout @ A Time"

I have never been more cognizant of my health than I am now, as I stare down the hallway at 40…mid-life…. the age stuff begins to happen if you allow it to. As a youth, I played sports. My freshman year in high school, I lettered (Varsity Volleyball). During my college years I met a friend who was able to talk me into running with her. I can’t say I ENJOYED running, but I liked the way I looked in my clothes as a result, and I REALLY liked the fact that running regularly allowed me to eat whatever I wanted without gaining weight. Eventually I added intense workouts. I exercised hard and looked great. Is exercise easier when you’re younger?

Now, staring down the hallway at 40 (yes, come back to the hallway) I realize that exercise is necessary for optimal health. We pray for healing…prevention even, but often times fail to cooperate with God through a healthy lifestyle of discipline. While we have spiritualized cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease (and I agree that the root is demonic), we haven’t paid attention to where we have partnered with said agenda at the demise of our own health. It is bigger than us, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”(1 Corinthians 6:19) How have we given ourselves to emotional, mental and spiritual disciplines without considering that we rely on our vessels to carry out all tasks entrusted to us by God? How are we to be authentically living the gospel, if we ignore this area of stewardship?

Four years ago, I sat in my doctor’s office and told her that my father and all four of my grandparents had diabetes and heart disease. I explained that I did NOT accept those curses. I sat so “chin up “ in my confession of Christianity. She responded with one question, “Then are you willing to lose weight?” She explained that I was knocking at diabetes’ door and unless I changed my eating habits and began to exercise regularly, it was going to answer. At that moment, I realized my faith needed to have feet and the same faith would be dead without works that supported it. (James 2:17)

The aforementioned diseases are NOT our inheritance, yet we reach for them anyway through poor nutrition, poor time management and laziness. God desires that we prosper AND BE IN GOOD HEALTH even as our souls prosper. (3 John 1:2)

If you’ve ever heard me preach, you’ve likely heard me say at some point that there are no shortcuts. There aren’t. Many of us go to dangerous lengths to wear a smaller size for the sake of vanity and to give the appearance of good health. Yet when one has a conviction about good health, one understands it has to be from the inside out. To be healthy, you will have to do the work. I’m doing the work too. A small dress/pants size does not indicate a healthy person. Slim people can have bad cardiovascular health and high blood pressure too! A slim person can have too much fat around the heart that gets no exercise! It is imperative that EVERYONE walks in the TRUTH of the matter. One who is “Divinely Clear” understands, appreciates and RECEIVES the LOVE that motivated Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and in turn, loves Him, themselves and others TOTALLY & COMPLETELY.

For those of us who have committed to do the work, the thought of this LIFESTYLE CHANGE can be daunting and overwhelming at first. You think of every morning or evening that you will have to cut into in order to stay on track. My words to you are the same ones I whisper to myself…. “1 WORKOUT AT A TIME”. I have two groups of people that I exercise with and I have a tremendous amount of fun and awesome relationships in both.

I believe it was the Holy Spirit of God who inspired me to provide encouragement in this area, just as I have had to be encouraged. (2 Corinthians 1:4) Hopefully you’ll see these pieces below and want to take them home with you. Even better, you’ll purchase one or more for family and friends as well. We are our sisters’ keepers.
